Wash & Media Prep Services

All HSCRB laboratories located in the Bauer and Sherman Fairchild complex can use the Department's glass wash and media prep facility located in the Bauer basement. You may opt to be supported by the services of the Department’s service core facility staff OR have your lab personnel trained to cover your lab’s glass wash and/or media prep needs. Either way, the costs of glass wash and media prep are allowable expenses on sponsored awards.

HSCRB Glass Pipette Program

In 2012-13 Laboratories within HSCRB began to experiment with replacement of plastic pipettes with washable, reusable glass pipettes.  The savings of this program in one large laboratory alone has resulted in the reduction of use of almost one quarter million plastic pipettes and cost savings along with environmental savings are adding up.  If you would like to have additional information on the cost and resource savings associated with the Glass Pipette Program, please contact Joe Vaughan. If you decide that you are interested in joining this program for your laboratory, please contact LaTasha Jakes to find out more about the costs and requirements associated with implementation.

LaTasha Jakes, the glass wash & media prep team leader, supervises a staff of lab service assistants and would be happy to meet with you to understand your specific needs for glass wash and media. Bio waste disposal is managed by the Sid Paula of EH&S/FAS (please contact Sid with questions or concerns regarding waste removal (spaula@mcb.harvard.edu). The Department covers the cost of bio waste and regular waste removal.. Joe Vaughan, Assistant Director of Lab Operations, oversees HSCRB laboratories including Service Cores and Research Cores; please feel free to contact him with any questions or concerns.

Glass Wash & Media Prep Self-Service Options

Any one in your lab may be trained to do glass wash and media prep for you as an alternative or a supplement to using HSCRB Laboratory Services. Please contact Sarah Elwell ;in the FAS Division of Science, if you would like training for your individual lab personnel within glass wash facilities on campus – this training is required in order to have access to the Bauer Glass Wash Facility within HSCRB. If you choose glass wash and media prep self service, then you should order all supplies for media through your lab like any other lab supplies. Please note that there is limited room for storage of these supplies within the Bauer Media Prep Facility- please let LaTasha Jakes know of your storage needs.

To reserve equipment and instruments within HSCRB Core Facilities, go to Harvard's Research Computing site and log into Spinal at https://webapps.sciences.fas.harvard.edu/spinal.  You are required to have an RC account and you will have to be trained and approved on the particular instrument.
