Karin Gustafsson and Quan Zhou
Researchers from the Scadden Lab at MGH, HSCRB and the Melton Lab at HSCRB present their recent work
Karin Gustafsson, Ph.D.
Dr. Karin Gustafsson earned her PhD in Medical Cell Biology from Uppsala University, Sweden in 2013 under the supervision of Professor Michael Welsh. In her thesis work she focused on the adaptor protein Shb and its role in hematopoiesis and T cell responses. Since joining the Dr. David Scadden’s laboratory in 2014, she has developed two projects merging her two fields of expertise, immunology & hematology. Karin’s first project aims at understanding the regeneration of the thymic microenvironment after a bone marrow transplantation. Her second project revolves around chronic inflammation and how that affects the bone marrow niche.
Quan Zhou, Ph.D.
Dr. Quan Zhou earned her PhD at Nanjing Medical University & Institute of Zoology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. She joined the Melton Lab in 2017. As a member of the Melton Lab, their goal is to develop significant new treatments for diabetes. They aim to eliminate the present practice of regular blood checks and insulin injections, replacing them with insulin-producing cell transplants, specifically pancreatic beta cells that measure glucose levels and secrete just the right amount of insulin. Their approach is best characterized as applying developmental biology to understand and change the course of diabetes.
